BMW iX3 2022 Review

The BMW iX3 2022 is the much-awaited electric version of the top-selling BMW X3 in Australia. With a price tag of just under $115,000, it stands out as a more affordable option compared to its European EV rivals, such as the Audi e-tron, Mercedes-Benz EQC, and Jaguar I-PACE.

Built in China, the iX3 comes with a five-year subscription to the national Chargefox network in Australia. Unlike its competitors, the iX3 is not built on a dedicated electric platform. Instead, BMW has taken the regular X3 and replaced its combustion engine with an electric powertrain.

The exterior design closely resembles the regular X3 models, with a few aerodynamic enhancements, such as unique 20-inch alloy wheels, which reduce drag by 5% and add an extra 10 kilometres to the range.

Powered by a single electric motor on the rear axle, the iX3 uses an electrically excited synchronous motor that requires fewer rare earth materials. The motor is fed by a 74 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, good for a claimed range of 460 kilometres. However, the real-world range may drop by up to 100 kilometres with air conditioning running. The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes using a 150-kilowatt fast charger.

The interior is almost identical to its petrol-powered cousin, with high-quality plastics and materials, nice blue stitching, and technical patterning. It features a 10.25-inch central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. The iX3 also comes with a driver monitoring system, 3D surround view system, and reversing camera.

In terms of driving experience, the iX3 excels in maintaining a calm, smooth demeanour even in tight corners. Its refined powertrain suits the BMW brand perfectly. The ride comfort is impressive, thanks to the softened suspension, and the refinement levels are excellent.

The BMW iX3 2022 may not have the wow factor of ludicrous mode or a show-stopping sci-fi design, but it offers an impressively executed electric powertrain and a class-leading dynamic package at a more affordable price than its European rivals.
