The much-awaited second-generation Volkswagen Amarok has finally arrived in Australia after 12 years. Sharing key hardware with the current segment benchmark, the Ford Ranger, this all-new Amarok is set to impress.
Designed by a Melbourne-based team and produced in the same South African factory as the Ranger, the Amarok is tailored for the Australian market. It comes in five model grades with four different engines, closely resembling the Ranger portfolio. Although generally more expensive than the Ranger, Volkswagen claims that the Amarok offers a solid value equation with higher levels of equipment and luxury.
The standout engine is the three-litre turbo-diesel V6, which provides a little more torque but slightly less power than its predecessor. With a part-time four-by-four system that now includes low-range gearing, the Amarok has a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms and a tub payload of 1,065 kilograms for V6 models.
The Amarok’s design is unique and easily distinguishable, with the PanAmericana variant featuring a distinctive front bumper, matrix LED headlights, black 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres, black side steps, and a black powder-coated rear sports bar.
Inside, the cabin feels more like a luxury SUV than a typical dual-cab ute, with high-quality materials and textured leather upholstery. The infotainment system includes a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. The Amarok also comes with nine airbags and a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The Amarok is now one of the most engaging utes on the market, with its refined steering, suspension, brakes, and V6 engine. It’s also a capable off-roader, boasting 237 millimeters of ground clearance, low-range gearing, and a locking rear diff. The Amarok can easily handle challenging conditions and offers a composed and predictable ride on both paved and dirt roads.
Overall, the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok is a well-rounded vehicle that delivers a classy and engaging driving experience for the Australian market. With its unique design, luxurious cabin, and impressive off-road capabilities, it’s set to become a top contender in the ute segment.
