The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is the company’s first foray into the world of battery electric vehicles, under their new sub-brand “bZ”, which stands for “beyond zero”. This five-door, five-seat SUV is set to launch in Australia in late 2023. Although pricing hasn’t been announced yet, we estimate it could start around $70,000.
The bZ4X is powered by two e-motors, one on each axle, producing approximately 160 kW, and a 71.4 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of 460 km between recharges. The all-wheel-drive model boasts a 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds. A more affordable front-wheel-drive version with longer range and slower acceleration is also available.
Measuring 4.7 meters long, the bZ4X is similar in size to the popular RAV4 medium SUV. However, Toyota has extended the wheelbase to accommodate the large battery pack between the axles. The top-spec UK model features a luxurious interior with leather, piano black accents, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Rear seat room is generous, and the 452-liter boot offers ample storage, especially with additional space under the floor. On the road, the bZ4X delivers a comfortable, quiet ride with a focus on efficiency rather than performance.
With Toyota being a dominant player in the Australian car market, the arrival of the bZ4X is expected to generate more interest in zero-emissions motoring and encourage the switch from petrol to electric vehicles.
