Land Rover Defender 110 P400 2020 Review

The 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 marks a new era for the iconic British off-road vehicle, boasting a modern design, advanced technology, and improved performance. With its aluminium monocoque chassis, fully independent suspension, and state-of-the-art safety features, the new Defender is set to impress both on and off the road.

Initially available in a four-door long wheelbase 110 form, the Defender offers three engines and six trims, with nine derivatives in total. However, the two diesel entry variants have already sold out until early 2021 due to high demand in Australia.

The interior of the new Defender is a significant departure from its predecessor, featuring a 10-inch infotainment screen, the latest generation of Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 software, and an array of luxurious touches like timber in-lays and leather seats. However, throwback elements such as large bolts fixing the door panels and a hose-out rubber floor pay homage to the previous model.

Off-road capabilities are further enhanced with air suspension, 38-degree approach and 40-degree departure angles, wade sensing, and Land Rover’s most advanced four-by-four system. The Defender also boasts a water wading depth of 900 millimetres, a significant increase from the previous model’s 500 millimetres.

On-road performance has also improved dramatically thanks to the air suspension and multi-link rear, providing a smooth and comfortable ride. The P400 variant features a three-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine, including a 48-volt mild hybrid system and sequential turbochargers, offering 294 kilowatts and 550 Newton meters of power.

The new Defender’s cabin is available in five, six, or seven-seat layouts, each with ample passenger space and amenities. Quality materials and a five-year warranty in Australia underline the vehicle’s durability and appeal.

While traditionalists may be skeptical of the new technology and features, the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 is undeniably a step forward for the iconic nameplate, ensuring its relevance for decades to come.
