The 2020 Mazda CX-8 Touring is a versatile and spacious seven-seat SUV that now comes with a petrol engine option, making it an attractive choice for families. Previously, the CX-8 was only available with a diesel engine, while its sibling, the CX-9, was the petrol variant. The addition of a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, commonly seen in various Mazda models, has expanded the CX-8’s appeal.
The CX-9 remains the flagship model with its more powerful turbo 2.5-litre engine, and the CX-8 petrol variants are front-wheel drive, allowing for a more affordable price point. The base model CX-8 Sport starts under $40,000, while the Touring model we’re reviewing here is in the $50,000 range once on the road.
The CX-8 Touring offers a well-equipped and spacious interior, featuring high-quality materials, sensible controls, ample storage spaces, and rear climate controls. The back door opens a full 90 degrees for easy entry and exit, and the second-row seat flips and slides forward effortlessly. The third-row seats are more suitable for children, but folding down both the second and third rows reveals a generous amount of cargo space.
Equipped with important features such as autonomous emergency braking and Apple and Android smartphone connectivity, the CX-8 Touring is a safe and connected family vehicle. The new 2.5-litre petrol engine requires higher revs for overtaking and hill climbing, and the six-speed automatic transmission works through the gears at times. However, the engine operates smoothly and quietly, providing a comfortable driving experience.
The CX-8 petrol maintains Mazda’s reputation for confident handling and a nimble feel, despite its size. With the addition of the petrol engine, the 2020 Mazda CX-8 Touring offers an affordable entry point into the seven-seat SUV market without compromising on quality or features.
