The highly anticipated 2021 Toyota LandCruiser Sahara 300 Series has finally arrived, and it’s time to put it to the test on rough terrains. As the first all-new Land Cruiser since 2007, this model boasts a lighter, stiffer ladder frame chassis, a new powertrain, redesigned body, overhauled interior, and a host of new features and technology. The Sahara is now the third dearest variant behind the Sahara ZX and GR Sport, having lost its flagship status, but it still has an imposing presence.
The refreshed styling features a wide horizontal grille and slimline headlights, providing a robust yet sophisticated air. Ground clearance has increased slightly to 235 millimetres, while off-road geometry and wading depth remain generous. However, the old hydraulic kinetic dynamic suspension system is replaced by an electronic arrangement, E-KDSS, available only on the GR Sport.
The new 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 engine delivers more power and torque with improved fuel economy. The 10-speed automatic transmission replaces the old six-speeder, connected to a dual-range transfer case and full-time four-wheel drive.
The spacious and luxurious cabin features a new layout, new instrumentation, and a new multimedia touchscreen. The leather accented driver’s seat offers ample support and electronic adjustment, while the leather-wrapped wheel has power adjustments for tilt and reach, as well as heating. Front seats also have heating and ventilation options.
The 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen is user-friendly and intuitive, offering integrated satnav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. There are five USB-C charging outlets throughout the cabin.
Safety features are abundant, as Toyota Safety Sense suite packages many of the latest advancements. The second row has good head and legroom, with heating and ventilation for the outboard seats. The third-row seats are best suited for children, but they offer a power-folding function and electric seatback adjustment.
Off-road ability remains at the heart of the Land Cruiser ethos. The new 300 Series Sahara offers a refined driving experience with its powerful V6 twin-turbo diesel engine, slick 10-speed auto, and excellent noise suppression. The lighter and stiffer chassis, along with the new suspension system, ensures a controlled and composed ride.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser Sahara 300 Series is a worthy successor to its iconic family dynasty, offering a comfortable, capable off-roading experience with room and features that will keep adventurous families smiling.
