Toyota Prado VX 2022 Review

The Toyota Prado VX 2022 continues to dominate the large 4X4 wagon market, with new competitors like the Isuzu MU-X and Ford Everest trying to match its prowess. As the third generation of the Prado in Australia, this model has been on sale since 2009 and remains a sales success, only second to the LandCruiser in Toyota’s lineup of highly capable 4×4 wagons.

The VX model boasts several key exterior features, including 12-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, auto bi-LED headlights, and illuminated sidesteps. An optional tailgate repositions the full-size spare under the floor, although this means sacrificing the 63-liter sub fuel tank, which is a much-appreciated feature for long-distance off-road trips.

Under the bonnet, the Prado VX houses a 2.8-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, which has been in use since 2015. Despite previous issues with diesel particulate filters and dusting, Toyota claims to have resolved these problems. In 2020, the engine received a power and torque bump, driving all four wheels permanently via a 6-speed auto and a 2-speed transfer case with a lockable center Torsen limited-slip differential.

The Prado VX has a towing capacity of up to 3,000 kilograms, slightly lower than some of its rivals. Inside, the vehicle boasts a high-quality, solid feel, with luxury touches such as heated and ventilated leather front seats and a 14-speaker JBL audio system. The cold box between the front seats is perfect for keeping drinks cool during outback adventures.

While the Prado VX’s instrumentation and infotainment may appear dated compared to newer models, they remain functional and reliable. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, but wireless smartphone charging or connection is not available. The vehicle retains old-fashioned dials for its instrument display, with a digital speedo and comprehensive trip computer setup.

Safety features have been upgraded, with reversing cameras, parking sensors, and additional camera views for off-roading. The Prado VX offers ample space and luxury, with separate air conditioning controls, heated outboard seats, and plenty of storage. However, there are no USB points in the rear.

The third-row seats are best suited for children or short distances, but they do feature air conditioning vents and cup holders. The side-hinged tailgate provides minimal luggage space when all three rows of seats are in place, but folding down the second and third rows allows for ample storage.

The Prado VX’s driving experience is solid and refined, with prompt throttle response and low torque peak for overtaking. Its long-travel suspension setup excels at absorbing challenging road conditions, making it perfect for long-range driving. While fuel consumption may increase when loaded or towing, the Prado VX remains a highly capable off-road vehicle.

With a five-year unlimited kilometer warranty and capped price services for the first three years, the Prado VX continues to impress and appeal to those seeking a reliable, capable, and luxurious large 4×4 SUV.
